Casbrook recycling centre at Timsbury, near Romsey, closes from 12 October for a month of resurfacing. Eastleigh and Winchester are the nearest open sites.
Casbrook household waste recycling centre, the tip on Bunny Lane at Timsbury that serves Romsey and the south of Test Valley, will close for a month from Monday 12 October. It is due to reopen on Thursday 12 November.
Hampshire County Council, which runs the site, announced the closure on 2 October. The last day you can use it before the works is Sunday 11 October.
The quick answer
- Closed: Monday 12 October to Wednesday 11 November. Reopens: Thursday 12 November.
- Why: the tarmac under the waste containers is being replaced with reinforced concrete.
- Where to go instead: the county council names Eastleigh and Winchester, where it says there is enough capacity.
- Booking still applies at every Hampshire tip. Casbrook’s slots for the closure period are being taken off the booking system.
Why it is closing
The council says the surface under the site’s containers has been worn down by the heavy vehicles that use it every day. It is “reaching the end of its useful life”. Engineering assessments found it needed replacing to stop it getting worse.
The new surface is reinforced concrete. The month-long closure is mostly about the concrete: it has to harden fully before the containers and equipment can go back on it.
Councillor Kirsty North, the county council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for universal services, said a full closure was “the most practical and cost-effective approach” after “considering a range of alternatives”. She said “capacity is available at nearby HWRCs” for people who normally use Bunny Lane.
Where to take your rubbish instead
Every Hampshire tip keeps the same winter hours, 9am to 4pm, seven days a week, from 1 October to 28 February. All of them need a booking. These are the nearest, taken from the council’s recycling centre finder:
| Site | Address | Lunch closure | Distance from Casbrook |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eastleigh | Stoney Croft Rise, Chandler’s Ford, SO53 3YU | None listed | about 6 miles |
| Winchester | Bar End Industrial Estate, Bar End Road, SO23 9NP | 1pm to 1:30pm | about 8 miles |
| Marchwood | Normandy Way, Marchwood, SO40 4UD | 1pm to 1:30pm | about 8 miles |
| Andover | Scott Close, Walworth Industrial Estate, SP10 5NU | 1pm to 1:30pm | about 13 miles |
Distances are straight lines between postcodes, so the drive will be longer. Eastleigh and Winchester are the two the council recommends.
Andover readers are not affected. Scott Close stays open as normal, though it may be a little busier if Romsey households spread north.
What it means for you
- Book before you load the car. Use the county’s booking page. The council says it is using the booking system to manage the extra demand at the other sites.
- Half term falls inside the closure, from 26 to 30 October, as does most of the autumn garden clear-up. Expect slots to go faster at Eastleigh and Winchester than usual.
- A van, pick-up or trailer needs a permit at any Hampshire tip. You can check your vehicle before you set off.
- Garden waste can go in the brown bin if you subscribe, and bulky items can be collected by the borough council. Prices and how to book are on our Andover bin collection days page.
There will be signs at the Bunny Lane entrance during the closure.
